DESCRIPTION

The 5-day Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu with Glass Dome is a high-level trekking experience that combines adventure in the Andean highlands with moments of rest and comfort in one of the most breathtaking natural environments in Cusco. This route stands out not only for its glacial landscapes and its proximity to the imposing Salkantay mountain, but also for offering a more intimate, authentic, and exclusive experience of the Andean world.

Throughout the trek, travelers traverse diverse ecosystems, from high Andean plains dominated by snow-capped peaks and high-altitude lakes to Andean rainforest valleys filled with lush vegetation, rivers, and coffee plantations. Each day reveals a different landscape, making the trek dynamic and profoundly sensory.

The key differentiator of this tour is the overnight stay in a Glass Dome, an accommodation designed to blend seamlessly with the natural environment without disrupting its harmony. Sleeping in a transparent dome, surrounded by mountains and under a starry sky, transforms the trek into a contemplative experience, where the silence, the night sky, and the energy of the Andes become part of the journey.

The route culminates in Machu Picchu, Peru’s most iconic archaeological destination, concluding a journey that combines physical challenge, spiritual connection, and cultural discovery in a single adventure.

🏛️ History and Meaning of the Salkantay Route and its Connection to Machu Picchu

Since pre-Incan times, the Salkantay mountain has been considered one of the most powerful Apus (mountain spirits) of the Vilcanota mountain range. For Andean cultures, the Apus were sacred mountains, protectors of life, regulators of water, climate, and the fertility of the land. Salkantay, whose name can be interpreted as “wild mountain” or “untamed mountain,” was venerated as a major deity, on par with Ausangate.

The routes that now make up the Salkantay Trek were used for centuries as pilgrimage paths, connecting the highlands with the cloud forest and facilitating the exchange of goods, knowledge, and rituals. Hiking this route is not just a sporting activity; it is following ancestral footsteps once trod by priests, messengers, and Andean people.

Humantay Lagoon

Feeded by the glaciers of the snow-capped mountain of the same name, it was considered a sacred source of water and energy. In the Andean worldview, high-altitude lagoons represented portals of life, and even today many communities make symbolic offerings to Pachamama (Mother Earth) on their shores.

As you descend into the Andean cloud forest, the landscape changes, but the cultural significance remains. These valleys were key to the agricultural development of the Inca Empire (Tahuantinsuyo), as they allowed for the cultivation of tropical products that were then transported to the Inca administrative centers.

Finally, arriving at Machu Picchu represents the culmination of the journey. Built in the 15th century during the reign of Inca Pachacuti, this citadel was a ceremonial, political, and astronomical center of great importance. Its strategic location, nestled among sacred mountains and overlooking the Urubamba River canyon, demonstrates the Incas’ profound understanding of the land and the relationship between nature and architecture.

The Salkantay Trek with Glass Dome experience reinterprets this ancestral history from a contemporary perspective: it allows you to walk a sacred route, sleep under the same sky observed by the ancient Andean people, and arrive at Machu Picchu not just as a visitor, but as a hiker who has experienced the mountain step by step.

✨ An experience that transcends trekking

This tour is not just a hike to Machu Picchu. It is a journey of connection, where history, nature, and comfort come together to offer a transformative experience. The contrast between the physical exertion of the trek and the tranquility of the Glass Dome makes this route one of the most comprehensive and exclusive offerings in Cusco.

From Soraypampa, we begin the hike towards the impressive Humantay Lagoon (4,200 m a.s.l.), one of the most iconic natural landscapes in Cusco. The ascent is gradual, allowing you to enjoy sweeping views of the snow-capped peaks of Humantay and Salkantay. After some time to rest, take photos, and connect with the surroundings, we descend back to the campsite.

From the summit, we enjoy a unique panoramic view before beginning the descent to Huayracmachay, where we have lunch. Afterward, we continue to Chaullay, gradually entering the Andean cloud forest, with a noticeable change in climate and vegetation.
