ITINERARY

Itinerary

🗺️ Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

🚶‍♂️ Day 1: Cusco – Mollepata – Soraypampa – Humantay Lagoon – Camp

Very early, we begin the Salkantay Trek from Cusco, traveling by tourist transport to Mollepata, where we enjoy a hearty breakfast before continuing to Soraypampa (approx. 3,900 m a.s.l.), the starting point of the trek.

From here, we begin a gradual hike towards the breathtaking Humantay Lagoon, one of the most photographed spots on the Salkantay Trek. Its turquoise waters, fed by the meltwater of Mount Humantay, offer an unforgettable natural setting.

After visiting the lagoon, we descend back to Soraypampa and continue to the campsite, surrounded by imposing mountains with Mount Salkantay in the background. Enjoy a hot dinner and spend the night under a starry high-altitude sky.

🌳Day 2: Campsite – Salkantay Pass – Andean Rainforest – Santa Teresa

This day is the most challenging and spectacular of the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. We depart early for the Salkantay Pass (approximately 4,650 m above sea level), the highest point on the route. During the ascent, the landscapes change dramatically: glaciers, towering mountains, and an Andean silence that makes the experience even more special.

From the pass, we begin a long descent where the climate and vegetation start to change. Little by little, we leave the high mountains behind and enter the cloud forest, with warmer temperatures and lush green landscapes.

After lunch, we continue to Santa Teresa, an area known for its natural surroundings and proximity to Machu Picchu. Dinner and overnight stay at a tourist accommodation.

🏛️Day 3: Santa Teresa – Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

After breakfast, we transfer to the train station to travel to Aguas Calientes, the base town for Machu Picchu. Here you will have free time to rest or explore the town before the most anticipated moment of the trip.

We board a tourist bus to the citadel of Machu Picchu, where we enjoy a comprehensive guided tour of the main areas: the Temple of the Sun, the Sacred Plaza, the Intihuatana, and the ceremonial sites, with clear explanations of Inca history and architecture.

After the visit, we return to Aguas Calientes to board the train back and continue by tourist transport to Cusco, thus concluding an unforgettable experience on one of Peru’s most breathtaking routes.

RECOMMENDATIONS

🌟 Recommendations

➡️Acclimate in Cusco before the trek
The Salkantay Trek reaches altitudes of over 4,600 meters above sea level. It is essential to spend at least two days in Cusco beforehand to acclimatize to the climate and avoid altitude sickness.

➡️Prepare yourself physically with prior hikes
Although it is an accessible experience for active people, a moderate level of fitness is recommended. Hiking or exercising before the trip will help you enjoy the trek more comfortably.

➡️Pack appropriate clothing for extreme weather
During the trek, you’ll pass through very cold areas (like the Salkantay Pass) and through the warm, high-altitude rainforest. It’s essential to pack layers, a windbreaker, a hat, gloves, and a change of clothes for the second day.

➡️Don’t wear brand-new shoes
Your trekking boots should be waterproof, comfortable, and broken in beforehand. This will prevent blisters and discomfort during the hike.

➡️Pack a headlamp
Especially useful for the first few days of the day or at campsites. It’s also ideal in case of power outages.

➡️Protect your skin and health
Bring sunscreen, UV sunglasses, insect repellent, and a hat. Sun exposure and insect bites in the rainforest can be intense.

➡️Stay hydrated
During the trek, it’s vital to stay hydrated. We recommend bringing a reusable water bottle or hydration pack, and the team will provide you with treated water daily.

➡️Bring cash (soles)
In some parts of the trek, you can buy snacks or use restrooms, and cash is required. You’ll also need it for tips for the team (optional).

➡️Respect nature and local culture
The trail passes through sacred areas and living communities. Be a responsible traveler: don’t leave trash, don’t touch wild animals, and follow your guide’s instructions.
